Poor Man’s Car-Battery Repair – The Old Cranky Workshop
Any lead-acid battery will naturally degrade with use. The cause is lead-sulfate buildup. Here’s how you deal with it. Remember to always keep and store lead-acid batteries fully charged.

thank you for this post, did this today on my walmart maxx brand 3 year battery 5 months old, registered 2 volts walmart said it was no good, would not take a charge, could not exchange so tried this, filled up with the water, epson salt mixture and put on the fast charge within an hour and a half my tester showed that this battery was good as new, did great on the load test as well, now I have the light hooked up to drain it . . . thanks for saving me 80.00!
@whoolilicious -Let me know how it works for you, I am planning on trying this on some 6v batteries too! thanks!
great video! how much epsom salt do you recommended in a lawn mower battery? How much water?Did you drain the battery before adding the salt and water? Is the light needed to discharge the battery? Thanks for the help.
u didnt say whether you emtied out the acid existing in the battery prior to putting in the elson solution… do you have to fill up to the top?
5 out of 5 stars ill try it
hey thanks, love the music….will give it a try.
can we just add epsom salts to a new battery and avoid the buildup all together
Gday OldCranky Great video m8 , but I do have a question ,when are you going to do the video on shorted battery’s .
great advice but i just got a new battery for 120 bucks. ahahaha
I love the video, thanks.
I have an off the grid solar system with 24 6v batteries that are pretty dead. I would like to try this approach, but am wondering if I have to disconnect the system and process each battery individually or can I add the epson salt solution to all the batteries and charge and discharge them as a unit? I appreciate the advice.
would good old morton iodized salt work???
thanks for the info!!
thanks a lot man
I just checked the battery and it is at 12.7 volts and climbing after 2 hours of charging with just the solar panel. I will fully discharge the battery once it reaches 13-14 volts under charge, and then recharge it again and see if it is fully repaired. Does anyone know if the liquid in the battery should be fully drained since it would have alot of epsom salt and sulfates in it ?

I have some info . I just tryed this with a deep cycle 115 A/H battery . The battery would not take a charge and was around 11.4 volts { dead as a doornail} . I did the epsom salt routine and it helped a little bit . It took a charge tp 12.3 volts but the charger was unable to get the battery charged above 12.3 volts and the battery did not hold that charge long. I decided that I needed to pump higher volts into the battery so I used my 50 watt solar panel that puts out 19 volts D/C. y
Photon energy your awesom dude
Thanks soon oil will end
I will try this today. Thanks a lot!
